Yellow Highest contrast on grey and dark floors External paths, car parks
Black For pale floors Light pavers, polished concrete
White For dark floors Dark stone, bitumen, charcoal tile
Beige Softer alternative to white Retail and heritage interiors
Grey Discreet, architect specified Confirm contrast before you commit

Compliance

Tactile ground surface indicators in Australia are governed by AS/NZS 1428.4.1, referenced by the National Construction Code and the Disability Discrimination Act access standards. The three things an inspector checks most often:

  • Set-back. Warning indicators sit 300 mm back from the leading edge of the hazard, stair nosing or ramp transition.
  • Depth of field. Warning indicators run the full width of the hazard, typically 600 mm deep. Confirm the depth your project requires, as some authorities and site conditions call for more.
  • Luminance contrast. A minimum 30% contrast against the surrounding surface. Contrast is a relationship, not a colour, so your floor matters as much as the indicator. Choose the colour against your actual substrate.
We supply compliant product, but we are not your certifier. Final set-out, contrast measurement and sign-off sit with your access consultant or building surveyor. Send us the drawing and we will tell you what the job needs.

Installing it

1
Sweep and degrease. The surface has to be dry, sound and free of curing compound or sealer.
2
Dry lay the full field first and mark your 300 mm set-back before you peel anything.
3
Prime porous substrates. Bare concrete, asphalt and unsealed pavers all need primer or the adhesive will not key.
4
Peel, place, then load the whole tile with a roller or firm foot pressure. Work from one edge so you do not trap air.
5
Keep foot traffic off for the adhesive cure time, longer in cold weather.

Questions buyers ask

Which way do the bars go?
Along the direction you want people to walk, never across it. Bars laid across the path read as a warning and will fail inspection.
How wide should the directional strip be?
A single 300 mm tile width is the usual run. Wider runs are used in large open concourses. Your access consultant sets it on the drawing.
Do I need warning tactiles as well?
Almost always. Directional indicators guide people along a route, warning indicators tell them a hazard is coming. A path that leads to a stair needs both.
Do I need primer?
On bare concrete, asphalt or unsealed pavers, yes. On sealed non porous floors usually not. When in doubt, prime.
Can I cut them to finish a run?
Yes, score and snap with a sharp blade. Cut the tile at the end of the run rather than breaking up the middle of the pattern.
Will they come loose outdoors?
Not on a prepared and primed substrate. Lifting is a preparation failure, almost never a product failure.
