Trade & Bulk

Mechanically fixed plates are the usual call on government, transport and education work. We quote these by the job including set-out marking.

White For dark floors Dark stone, bitumen

Compliance

Tactile ground surface indicators in Australia are governed by AS/NZS 1428.4.1, referenced by the National Construction Code and the Disability Discrimination Act access standards. The three things an inspector checks most often:

  • Set-back. Warning indicators sit 300 mm back from the leading edge of the hazard, stair nosing or ramp transition.
  • Depth of field. Warning indicators run the full width of the hazard, typically 600 mm deep. Confirm the depth your project requires, as some authorities and site conditions call for more.
  • Luminance contrast. A minimum 30% contrast against the surrounding surface. Contrast is a relationship, not a colour, so your floor matters as much as the indicator. Choose the colour against your actual substrate.
We supply compliant product, but we are not your certifier. Final set-out, contrast measurement and sign-off sit with your access consultant or building surveyor. Send us the drawing and we will tell you what the job needs.

Installing it

1
Dry lay the field and mark your 300 mm set-back from the hazard edge.
2
Drill through the fixing holes into the substrate using the supplied plugs as the gauge.
3
Run a bead of adhesive across the back of the plate as well as fixing it. Mechanical fixings hold it down, adhesive stops the edges curling.
4
Drive the screws until the plate is flush. Do not over tighten or you will dish the plate.
5
Check the field is flush and trip free along every edge before you leave.

Questions buyers ask

Why pay more than the peel and stick tile?
Because a lot of specifications will not accept adhesive only fixing, particularly on public infrastructure and high traffic external work. Mechanical fixing survives pressure washing, thermal movement and vandalism that would lift an adhesive tile.
Are the screws and plugs included?
Yes, every plate ships with its fixings. You will still want adhesive as well. Screws hold the plate down, adhesive stops the edges curling.
Do I still need adhesive if I am screwing it down?
We recommend it. A bead across the back prevents edge lift and water tracking under the plate, which is the main long term failure.
How deep do I drill?
Use the supplied plug as the gauge. Drill to plug depth plus a few millimetres for dust so the plug seats flush.
Can I use these on a timber deck or steel?
Yes, with the appropriate fastener for the substrate. Tell us the substrate and we will specify it, because the supplied plugs are sized for masonry.
Is it compliant?
The plate is manufactured to AS/NZS 1428.4.1. Compliance of the finished installation depends on set-back, depth and luminance contrast on your site, and your certifier signs that off.
