Best Sewer Pump Station for Rural Properties
Choosing a sewer pump station for a rural property? This is for people on acreage, farms and lifestyle blocks, where the house is a long way from anywhere and so is the nearest plumber.
The best sewer pump station for most rural properties is the Kwikflo 900L Sewer Pump Station at $4,699, because the big tank rides out a blackout and the pre-assembled cutter pump handles up to 14 metres of head on ordinary 240V power. If your run is long and uphill, or a failure would leave the house unusable for days, step up to the Kwikflo Dual Sewer Pump Station with a backup pump. Everything else on this page is about which of those two camps you are in.
Want your exact size? Our pump station sizing calculator works out the tank, head and flow from how many people the house holds and how far and high the pipe runs, then shows the stations that fit.
Our top pick for rural blocks
Kwikflo 900L Sewer Pump Station: 900 litres of reserve, 0.75 kW cutter pump, 240V, valves and pipework already fitted. $4,699.
What makes a rural pump station different
A rural pump station has to cope with three things a suburban one rarely sees: long pipe runs, unreliable power and nobody nearby when it fails.
In town, the sewer main is usually a short hop from the house. On a 10 acre block the station might be pushing 80 or 150 metres to a pressure sewer connection or to the treatment system your plumber has specified, often uphill. That length costs head, and head is what kills undersized pumps.
Then the power. Storms take out rural lines far more often than suburban ones, and a pump station with no power is just a tank filling up. The only thing that buys you time is litres.
Then the callout. A failed pump in the suburbs is a same day job. Out of town it can be a three day wait and a long travel charge. That changes the maths on spending more up front.

1. Kwikflo 900L: best overall for a rural house
The Kwikflo 900L is the right station for a typical three or four bedroom rural house running on single phase power. The tank holds roughly a day of normal household use for a family of four, so a storm outage overnight means nothing backs up into the house.
The 0.75 kW cutter pump moves up to 420 litres a minute at low head and tops out at 14 metres. That covers most rural runs where the discharge does not climb much above the house.
Ball valve, non return valve, barrel unions and pipework come fitted. The tank is 1200mm deep and 1075mm across, so you need machine access to dig it in, which on a farm is rarely the problem. $4,699.

2. Kwikflo Dual 900L with cutter pumps: best with a backup pump
The Kwikflo Dual 900L with two ALC750 cutters is the pick when one failed pump would leave the house without a working toilet for days. It runs the two pumps duty and standby through a control panel, so if one dies the other carries on.
It stays on 240V, so no 3 phase upgrade. Same tank, same head as the single pump version. You are paying about $1,000 more for a spare that is already installed and wired. On a property three hours from the nearest service tech, that is cheap insurance. $5,716.
We cover the duty and standby setup in more detail in Dual Pump Station: When You Actually Need a Backup.

3. Kwikflo Dual 900L with grinder pumps: best for long uphill runs
The grinder version of the Kwikflo Dual is the only station on this list built for really long or steep rural runs. Two 1.5 kW ALG1500 grinders reach 30 metres of head, more than double the cutter pumps.
Grinders shred solids into a slurry fine enough to push through small bore pressure pipe over hundreds of metres. That is exactly what a rural pressure sewer connection needs. The catch is power: this variant runs on 415V 3 phase. Plenty of farms already have 3 phase for sheds and bores. If yours does not, the supply upgrade can cost more than the station. $8,495 for the 900L, with 1200L and 2000L tanks available.
4. Kwikflo 1200L: most reserve on a single pump
The Kwikflo 1200L is the choice for a big house, a house plus a guest wing, or a block where outages run long. The extra 300 litres buys several more hours before the high level alarm sounds.
Same 0.75 kW cutter and 14 metre head as the 900L. The real difference is depth: 1600mm, which on rocky or wet ground is a much bigger dig. Get your excavator operator to look at the spot before you pick this over the 900L. $4,999.

5. REEFE QubeX 250: best for a cabin, studio or granny flat
The REEFE QubeX 250 suits a secondary building on a rural block, like a guest cabin, studio or farm stay unit, not the main house. A 250 litre tank gives a few hours of reserve, which is fine for a building that is empty half the week.
Its REEFE grinder reaches 19.5 metres, more head than the Kwikflo cutters, which helps when the cabin sits down the hill from wherever the waste needs to go. It fits through a doorway and is NSW and SA Health approved. $3,399.
Already have a pit? Upgrade the pump instead
If the tank is sound and only the pump is failing on a long run, a stronger pump is cheaper than a new station. The Aline SABRE ALG1500-1A grinder pump runs on single phase 240V, reaches 30 metres of head and 240 litres a minute, and has a built in float. $2,303.80.
That makes it the go to pump for a rural pressure line where 3 phase is not available. Your plumber has to match the pit, guide rail and discharge fittings, so treat it as a trade part, not a weekend swap.
How to choose between them
The right rural pump station comes down to four numbers: people in the house, head, power supply and how long a failure can go unfixed.
- Head under about 10m, single phase, one house: Kwikflo 900L.
- Same, but a breakdown means days without a toilet: Kwikflo Dual 900L cutter.
- Head above 12m or a run of several hundred metres: grinder pumps. Dual grinder if you have 3 phase, the SABRE ALG1500-1A if you do not.
- Large household or long outages: Kwikflo 1200L.
- Cabin or granny flat only: REEFE QubeX 250.
Head is the number people get wrong. Measure from the bottom of the pit to the highest point the pipe reaches, then add friction for the length. On a long rural run friction can be the bigger half. Our guide on how to calculate head height for a pump station walks through it with real numbers.
Rural install points that catch people out
Most rural pump station problems come from the install, not the station.
Fit the alarm somewhere you will hear it. A high level alarm on the tank lid 60 metres from the house is useless at 2am. Run it to the house or the shed you work in.
Plan for outages. A bigger tank is the simple answer. Some owners also wire a generator inlet for the station circuit, which your electrician can advise on.
Watch the lid near machinery. Standard covers are pedestrian rated. If a ute, tractor or stock truck could ever drive over it, order a load rated cover from the Class D trafficable range at the start.
Keep wipes out of it. Every rural station we have seen die early died of wet wipes, and rural callouts cost more.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best sewer pump station for a rural property in Australia?
The Kwikflo 900L Sewer Pump Station at $4,699 is the best choice for most rural houses, because its 900 litre tank rides out power outages and its 240V cutter pump reaches 14 metres of head. Long uphill runs need a grinder pump instead.
How long will a sewer pump station last without power?
A 900L sewer pump station holds roughly a day of normal use for a family of four before it fills, while a 250L station gives only a few hours. Cutting water use during an outage stretches that further.
Do I need a grinder pump for a long rural run?
Yes, a grinder pump is the right choice for runs of several hundred metres or more than about 12 metres of head, because it shreds solids fine enough for small bore pressure pipe. The Aline SABRE ALG1500-1A reaches 30 metres on single phase 240V.
Do rural sewer pump stations need 3 phase power?
No, most rural sewer pump stations run on standard 240V single phase, including the Kwikflo 900L, Kwikflo 1200L and REEFE QubeX 250. Only the larger grinder dual stations need 415V 3 phase.
Is a dual pump station worth it on a farm?
A dual pump station is worth it on a farm when a single pump failure would leave the house unusable until a technician arrives, which in remote areas can be days. The 240V Kwikflo Dual 900L costs about $1,000 more than the single pump model.
