Sewer Pump Station Cost Australia: What You'll Pay

What a Sewer Pump Station Really Costs in Australia

A sewer pump station costs somewhere between $3,200 and $10,000, fully installed, in most parts of Australia. Where you land in that range comes down to tank size, how deep the pit has to go, and how far the site is from mains power. The unit itself is usually the smaller half of the bill. Installation, electrical work and council paperwork make up the rest, and that's exactly where two quotes for the "same" job end up nothing alike.

We get the call after someone's already had a shock. A mate quoted them $3,500, the actual quote came back at $7,800, and now they're on the phone asking what happened. Nothing dodgy happened. They were quoted a unit price and a job price, and those are two different numbers.

The short version

For a straightforward install, budget $5,000 to $6,500 all up for a 250L station: unit, dig, connection, done. A whole house on 900L pushes that to $7,000 to $9,000. A large home or light commercial site on 1200L, especially with a dual pump for backup, can run $9,000 to $12,000+ once excavation and electrical are in.

Those numbers assume a normal dig: no rock, reasonable access, power within a short run of the pit. Anything outside that, and the price moves.

What you're actually paying for

A sewer pump station quote is four line items stapled together, not one number. The unit, the dig, the electrical, and the paperwork. Most confusion comes from someone comparing a unit price against someone else's job price.

The unit itself

Installation and excavation

Installation typically adds $1,500 to $4,000 on top of the unit, and it's the line item that moves the most. A shallow 250L pit with clear access and soft ground might be a day's work for a plumber and an excavator operator. A 1200L pit at 1.6 metres deep, with rock, or with the machine having to work off a narrow side access, is a completely different job.

Ask for the dig priced separately from the unit. It's the only way to compare quotes properly, because two installers can price the identical station and land $2,000 apart purely on how they've assessed your ground.

Electrical connection

Every sewer pump station needs a dedicated circuit, usually with a high-level alarm wired back to somewhere you'll actually hear it. Budget $300 to $800 for a licensed electrician to run the circuit, unless the switchboard is a long way from the pit, in which case the cable run pushes that number up.

This is licensed electrical work. Don't let anyone talk you into DIYing the wiring to save the fee.

Council and water authority fees

Most sewer pump station installs need approval from the local water authority before the pump goes in the ground, and the fee for that varies by council and by state. It can be a modest lodgement fee or a more involved application if the site is unusual. Your licensed plumber handles the lodgement as part of the job and will know the number for your area before you commit to anything.

Running costs

A domestic sewer pump station adds somewhere in the order of $30 to $80 a year to the power bill for a typical household, based on a small pump cycling a handful of times a day. That's not the whole running cost picture though. The pump is a wear item, not the tank, and budgeting for a pump replacement every several years is the more realistic ongoing cost to plan around.

What blows a quote out

Five things push a job from the low end of the range to the high end, and none of them are optional extras someone's trying to sell you.

  • Depth. Every extra metre of dig is more excavation, more shoring, and past about 1.5 metres you're into confined space procedures for the install.
  • Access. A backyard a machine can drive straight into costs less to dig than one that needs everything wheelbarrowed in through a side gate.
  • Rock. Sandstone or clay-with-rock changes an excavator job into a rock-breaker job, and that's charged differently.
  • Dual pump backup. Worth it if a failure means the site stops functioning, but it's a second pump and more wiring, not a free option.
  • Distance from power. A pit 40 metres from the switchboard needs 40 metres of trenched cable, and that's priced by the metre.

The cheap quote trap

The cheapest quote on a sewer pump station is almost never the cheapest station over its life. The gap between quotes is nearly always in what's excluded, not what's included. A quote that looks $1,500 lighter than the others has usually just left the electrical connection, the council lodgement, or the high-level alarm out of scope, and you meet that cost later as a separate invoice.

Get every quote itemised the same way: unit, dig, electrical, paperwork, each as its own line. If a quote won't break down like that, ask why.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sewer pump station cost in Australia?

Fully installed, a domestic sewer pump station costs $5,000 to $6,500 for a 250L granny flat or basement system, and $7,000 to $12,000 or more for a whole house or dual pump setup, depending on excavation difficulty and how far the site is from power.

Does the price include installation?

No. The unit price covers the tank and pump package only. Installation (excavation, plumbing, electrical connection and council lodgement) is quoted separately by your licensed plumber and electrician and typically adds $1,800 to $4,800 on top.

Why do quotes vary so much between installers?

Mostly because of what's excluded, not what's included. Two installers pricing the same unit can land thousands apart if one has priced the electrical connection and council fees and the other has left them for you to arrange separately.

Do I need council approval, and does that add to the cost?

Usually yes, and the fee varies by water authority and by state. Your licensed plumber lodges the application as part of the job. Ask them to confirm the fee for your council before you commit to a quote.

Is a single pump station cheaper to run than a dual pump one?

Running costs are similar, since only one pump cycles at a time in a dual setup. The second pump is a backup, not extra load. The cost difference is upfront, in the unit price and the wiring, not in the power bill.
