Pre-assembled vs Site-Built Pump Stations
A preassembled pump station versus one built on site, written for Australian plumbers, builders and homeowners weighing up the two.
Not sure what size you need? Try our sewer pump station calculator. It works out the tank size, pump head and the packaged stations that fit your job.
A preassembled pump station arrives as one finished unit: tank, pump, guide rail or pedestal, discharge pipework, non return valve, isolating valve, float switches, high level alarm and lid, all fitted and tested in a factory. A site-built station is a bare tank that a plumber fits out in the ground on the day. For domestic and small commercial work in Australia, the pre-assembled package wins the overwhelming majority of jobs, and it usually wins on price once the labour is counted honestly.
The short version
Buy pre-assembled unless you have a specific reason not to. A packaged 250L station like the Kwikflo 250L Sewer Pump Station at $3,199 goes in the hole, gets a discharge line and a power connection, and it is done. No valve list to price, no guide rail to align, nobody standing in a wet pit at 4pm cutting pipe.
Build on site when the geometry is unusual, when you are reusing an existing concrete pit, or when the control philosophy is beyond what a packaged unit ships with. Those jobs are real. They are also a minority.
What a pre-assembled pump station actually includes
A packaged station includes every component between the inlet and the discharge, already installed. On the Waternex range that means the poly tank, the submersible pump, the pedestal or guide rail system, the riser pipe, a non return valve, an isolating ball valve, the float switch or switches, and a pedestrian rated access lid. Most also ship with a high level alarm.
The part people underrate is the factory test. Pump fitted to the discharge, valve orientation checked, float travel set, all before the unit leaves the building. On a site-built station every one of those checks happens in a hole.
The components you would otherwise buy separately
The gap between a bare pump and a finished station is roughly $1,700 on a 250L unit, and that buys a lot of parts and labour. The REEFE RGM055A grinder pump on its own is $1,590. The same pump inside the complete REEFE RGM055A 250L Sewer Pump Station is $3,305. That $1,715 difference covers the tank, the lid, the guide rail, the valves, the riser, the alarm, the assembly and the test.
Try beating that number by buying parts and paying a plumber to put them together. It is close at best, and you carry the risk.
What site-built means on the ground
A site-built station starts with an empty tank or an existing pit, and everything else gets specified, bought and fitted by the installer. That is a genuine trade skill and a good plumber does it well. It is also several extra hours of labour, a parts list that has to be right first time, and a pit somebody has to get into.
Confined space is the part that moves the cost. Once a person has to get into the pit to align a guide rail or hold a valve, the job picks up permits, a standby person and gas testing on commercial sites. A 1200L tank is 1600mm deep. That is not a lean over the edge job.
Where site-built genuinely wins
Site-built is the right answer on four kinds of job. Retrofits into an existing concrete or brick pit, where no packaged tank will fit the opening. Deep or oddly shaped chambers where the inlet arrives at a level a standard tank does not suit. Duty and standby arrangements with a specific control philosophy, telemetry or three phase switchgear that a domestic panel will not do. And staged commercial work where the tank is set months before the pump is chosen.
If your job is not one of those four, the packaged unit is almost certainly cheaper and faster.
Cost and time compared
Pre-assembled is cheaper on total installed cost for a standard domestic job, once install hours are priced in. The table below uses Waternex list prices and typical install patterns, not a best case.
| Comparison | Pre-assembled package | Site-built |
|---|---|---|
| What arrives | Tank, pump, valves, guide rail, floats, alarm, lid | Tank or existing pit only |
| Typical fit-off time | Half a day | One to two days |
| Confined space entry | Usually avoidable | Usually required |
| Parts risk | Supplier carries it | Installer carries it |
| Warranty | One supplier for the whole unit | Split across every component brand |
| Best for | Granny flats, basements, houses, small commercial | Retrofits, odd geometry, custom controls |
Packaged station pricing across the range sits like this:

Warranty is the argument that ends most debates
A packaged station gives you one supplier to call when something stops working. That matters more than the price gap. On a site-built station the pump is one brand, the valves another, the panel a third, and the assembly belongs to the plumber. When a float sticks and the pit floods, everybody points sideways.
The same logic applies to product certification. A certified packaged product is certified as supplied. Assemble your own from parts and the compliance conversation with the water authority gets longer. Our guide to WaterMark certification on pump stations covers what the mark does and does not cover.
Servicing a packaged station later
A guide rail system lets the pump be lifted out from the surface without anyone entering the pit. That is the single best reason to buy packaged rather than improvised. The pump slides up its rail, off the discharge foot, and out on a chain. Ten minutes, no entry, no permit.
Site-built stations that use a plain pedestal and a flexible hose are cheaper to fit and horrible to service. Somebody has to climb in. Every time.
What to check before ordering a pre-assembled station
Four numbers decide whether a packaged unit suits your site, and all four are cheap to check now and expensive to discover later.
- Access route. A 900L or 1200L tank is 1075mm across. Measure the path from the truck to the hole, not just the hole.
- Inlet height. The incoming drain has to land above the pump start level. Give your plumber the tank drawing before you dig.
- Total head. Static lift plus friction loss decides the pump, not the tank size. Work it through with our head height guide.
- Lid load class. Packages ship pedestrian rated. If the pit ends up under a driveway you need a load rated cover, and it is far cheaper specified at order.

Stormwater packages follow the same logic
Stormwater stations come pre-assembled too, with a drainage pump instead of a grinder. The Kwikflo 250L Stormwater Pump Station is $2,607, and lighter domestic jobs are covered by the REEFE Stormwater Pit and Pump kit from $799. Frequently asked questions
What is a preassembled pump station?
A preassembled pump station is a complete pumping unit supplied with the tank, pump, guide rail, discharge pipework, non return and isolating valves, float switches, alarm and lid already fitted and factory tested. It is installed as one item rather than built up from parts on site.
Is a pre-assembled pump station cheaper than building one on site in Australia?
Yes, on a standard domestic job, once install labour is counted. A packaged 250L station starts at $3,199 supplied complete, while the bare grinder pump alone is $1,590 before a tank, valves, guide rail or any assembly hours.
Can a plumber install a pre-assembled pump station on their own?
A licensed plumber handles the tank set, drainage connection and discharge line, and a licensed electrician does the power and control connection. Both trades are needed on an Australian install, and the electrical work cannot be done by the plumber unless they hold the relevant licence.
How long does a packaged pump station take to install?
Excavation aside, fit-off on a packaged station is typically half a day, against one to two days for a site-built equivalent. Excavation, bedding, backfill and the electrical connection are the variables that move the total, not the station itself.
When should I build a pump station on site instead of buying a package?
Build on site when you are retrofitting an existing concrete pit, when the chamber geometry or inlet level suits no standard tank, when you need custom controls, telemetry or three phase switchgear, or when the tank must be set long before the pump is chosen.

This guide is general information for Australian conditions and is not a substitute for advice from a licensed plumber. Pump station installation and sewer connection are regulated work, and requirements differ between states and water authorities. Have your plumber confirm sizing, approvals and compliance before you order, and have a licensed electrician complete the power and control connection.
